If someone had told me 10 years ago what my life would be right now, I would have laughed at their face. I belonged to a middle class family and even though life was good, I had big dreams. My father, being the typical middle class father, wanted me to go into the teaching line just like my grandfather. He felt that it was a safe career for an average student like me plus the hours after the school time could be used to earn some extra cash by joining him in his accounts field, buy a home and settle down in life.
Of course I had other plans!
I had discovered my love for coding and gaming in college. So despite my father’s best attempts, I went to the examination hall for the entrance to the teaching program but did not attempt the paper. I knew that my chances of clearing the paper were not high but I also knew that if by the twist of fate I cleared it, my parents would find a way to convince (read force or emotionally blackmail) me into joining the program. For 3 consecutive I did the same thing.
Thankfully just before I appeared for my final exams of my Bachelor’s degree, I got a chance to take the test for a leading multinational company for an IT job. By the grace of God, I cleared both the rounds and was one among the few selected from my college for the distance learning and part time job program.
4 months later my parents reluctantly sent me away from home to pursue my dream to make it big in the IT industry. I, with a couple hundred other trainees, underwent an exhaustive 3 month training before being placed in projects. I was chosen to be a part of a project running for a Swedish Telecom company.
It was my first time in the professional environment and I had plenty of people to learn from. I was one of the few who enjoyed working late and coming early to the office. I also loved learning new tools so I got to attend plenty of training in my first year. My parents who were unsure of my talents loved listening to the stories of my office with them. They were overjoyed when I received an award for my contribution to the project. My pay check was still small as I was a part time employee.
By this time, I had a wonderful girlfriend who I intended to marry and also was learning more in the project. My moment came when I was selected to be sent to Sweden for a short term trip.
It was a great achievement as none of my other friends had yet gotten this chance. I was the first one.
This moment made me feel even more confident about my future. I felt like I was finally the person who deserved to be as successful as I dreamed to be. 10 years later, I have traveled major countries of the world, married my long-time girlfriend and fulfilled many of our dreams, my parents are proud of my achievements. I have achieved plenty in life but the most special moment is the one when I got to travel to Sweden for the very first time!
