One of the most famous quotes about change is – Change is a Constant. Life changes every second and we ought to move with it. There are changes that come on their own and there are ones that we stand up and bring about. And there is a big difference between these changes, one we have to adjust with and one that makes us feel empowered and strong. There are plenty of turning points in my life where changes came out of nowhere and bowled me over but there are a few where I was the driver. Here is the story of one such moment, a moment that changed my life forever. This is my “Start A New Life” moment!
I had been an average student throughout my school life with too much interest in games especially computer games. Online gaming or even internet were unheard of at the time but Video Game Cafés were in every nook and corner of major cities. There was one such shop near my home and I used to go there in the afternoon instead of going to my tuition.
I used to forget doing my homework and other commitments but I was devoted to games. One of cousin was also fond of gaming and used to accompany me. My mother was a stay-at-home mom but quite some time she could not figure out that I was deceiving her.
Slowly I started gathering courage to stop paying tuition fees and start using that to play more games at the Café. A few months into this and my mother came across my tuition teacher. She asked about how I was doing and he told her that he had not seen me or taught me for a long time. My mother went back home, and as she now tells me, cried and then patiently waited for me to come back home from “tuition”.
I returned at the time tuition is supposed to end and faked a wrist pain to retire into my room. She came to my room and calmly asked me about how my studies were going. I had flunked a couple of tests so she was concerned. I gave her more lies. She went into the kitchen and behaved normally until the next afternoon.
When I left for the “tuition”, she asked my neighbour’s 5 year old boy to follow me and inform her about my whereabouts. I had been living the lie for such a long time that I was now not even worried about getting caught. I felt assured that I could pass Class X and on in the same way playing video games and wasting money.
A few minutes into the game, I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned back to see my mom. My heart came into my throat. She did not look calm anymore. I was terrified.
She dragged me by my collar from the shop and brought me into the street. She scolded the owner of the Café for letting young boys play games there. He ignored her. But I felt so ashamed of myself. My mother scolded me in the street and told me she would beat me if I set my foot in that shop again. I pleaded her to keep quiet and promised her that I would focus on my studies and never lie to her again.
She let me save my face and without any more drama brought me back home. Despite my requests she told my father about my gaming escapades and also told him to give me chance.
My parents gave me a chance to prove myself.
And that is the moment that changed my life forever. I decided to change. I followed through on my promise and never let them down. I scored well in Class X, Class XII, got a distinction in my graduation and went on to complete my Master’s from a very reputed institute with distinction!
I am still a gamer at heart and play online games all the time but I never let it affect any other commitments of my life. I would not have reached the heights I have reached in life if I had not decided to change and start a new life!
